     What is a politically correct whipped whelp of a straight White male poet who concomitantly wants to write, but believes that there should be no poems from White males, and that writing from another perspecitve is “colonizing” and “appropriating another person’s experience”?<\/p>\n

     According to Elisa Gabbert over at “Electric Literature<\/a>“, the answer is to Shut Up!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Instead we should tell men to submit less. Pitch less. Especially white men. You are already over-represented.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

     Oh, straight White males can continue writing, just as long as they keep it in the closet<\/em>.<\/p>\n

     The reasoning is the tired an unoriginal regurgitation about how society is a construct of straight White males who can only write about straight White males and thus from an oppressive viewpoint.<\/p>\n

“The white male experience was not more important in the past than it is now. In Western culture, the white male experience has been overexposed, at the expense of other experiences, for centuries. The only difference is that the culture \u2013 at least the subculture that\u2019s important to you \u2013 no longer accepts the white male perspective as default.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

     This, of course, assumes that straight White males, or anyone else for that matter, are capable of broader world views that are not constrained by hierarchical intersectionality<\/a> of racial or sexual classifications.\u00a0\u00a0 It is an argument that everything that “\u00fee olde DWM<\/strong>s <\/strong>(dead white males)” wrote about is oppressive<\/a> and a reflection of that oppressive worldview, rather than an exploration of broader truths.<\/p>\n

     If you can not read Keats, Kipling, or Coleridge without seeing the greater art and beauty that they have created, then you have no business lecturing anyone<\/em> about poetry.<\/p>\n

     The only solution becomes the suppression of new, and old, poets and writers who just happen to be straight White males or the dreaded DWM<\/strong>s, and relegating all beauty, art, and incite they had to a marginalized and eschewed place in history.<\/p>\n

     Perhaps the problem isn’t a cabal of straight White men dismissing consciously, or subconsciously, all “PoC,” LGBTQ&c., and female voices in order to defend an “unearned privilege” a la<\/em> some tin-foil hat conspiracy of “Kyriarchy<\/a>.”\u00a0 Maybe, juuust maybe, the problem is that so many non-straight White males are taking up Elisa Gabbert’s world view and writing from some narrow viewpoint and worldview that most people just don’t give a rat’s patoot about.<\/p>\n

     To whit: People should write if they want to write, and feel free to write whatever they want.\u00a0 In this age of the internet and of self-publishing, you can put out whatever you like, and if people like it, they will buy it, or if they don’t, they won’t.<\/p>\n

     Perhaps it is time to stop blaming<\/a> straight White males for cruddy writing.\u00a0 There are many excellent writers out there that are not straight White males, and one will find that they don’t write from a “female” perspective in the narrow sense that all females have a common perspective to which they are limited from writing from (in the same way the straight White males writers are not so limited).\u00a0 A good writer will write for everyone, and in a way that “clicks” with people.<\/p>\n
