This law, known as a Religious Freedom Restoration Act or RFRA (pronounced \u201criff-ra\u201d), tracks the language of the 1993 federal RFRA signed into law by President Clinton after a 97-3 vote in the Senate. But you would not necessarily know how innocuous it is from news media coverage. For most of us, &#8220;affordable housing&#8221; means living someplace where we can afford the rent. The advocates of &#8220;affordable housing,&#8221; however, always want to live someplace we couldn&#8217;t afford to live \u2014 a trendy urban location \u2014 and demand a system of taxpayer subsidies and\/or burdensome regulations to force others to allow them to live in a high-rent community at below-market rates. The text says that the law should be interpreted consistent with the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act and its judicial interpretation. The federal law has been read to cover businesses and, in most circuits, to cover litigation between private parties if that litigation invokes federal law. Those were the two ways the Indiana law supposedly \u201cexpanded\u201d federal law.
