{"id":5257,"date":"2014-03-13T12:42:51","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T19:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/politicalhat.com\/?p=5257"},"modified":"2014-03-13T12:42:51","modified_gmt":"2014-03-13T19:42:51","slug":"common-core-bonds-in-a-knot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2014\/03\/13\/common-core-bonds-in-a-knot\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Core Bonds in a Knot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Some of the major problems with Common Core is that the materials are made by people who don&#8217;t understand what is being taught, teachers who don&#8217;t know how to teach it, and the use of jargon that makes Cockney rhyming slang seem transparently obvious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Take for example the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2014\/01\/21\/theyre-making-kids-stupid-now-check-out-this-common-core-math-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">following<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" align=\"center\">\n<p>My 9 year old sisters math homework with this &quot;common core&quot; shit. WHAT ARE THESE DIRECTIONS. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/GNw0uumhuR\">pic.twitter.com\/GNw0uumhuR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Lauren \u270c\ufe0f (@HollaAtMe_Baby) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HollaAtMe_Baby\/statuses\/425481448104001536\">January 21, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If presented in a proper manner, it does make sense.\u00a0 Adding 3 to 7 will result in 10, and taking 3 from the other 7 will result in 4, which makes adding the two numbers easy.\u00a0 Of course, this only makes sense if the student already understands the basics of addition and subtraction, as well as intuitively understands that one is rounding up one number to 10 while rounding down the other numbers equivalently.\u00a0 The problem with the above example, is that is does not explain <em>why<\/em> you split 7 into 3 and 4.\u00a0 The student would just go through the motion without actually understanding <em>why<\/em> it is done the way it is!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, these things are not explained.\u00a0 Furthermore, instead of explaining it, children are forced into word problems that often turn into word puzzles and trick questions.\u00a0 Take for example, the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2014\/01\/29\/just-try-to-decipher-this-unintelligible-common-core-math-question-we-dare-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">following<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5258\" title=\"Common Core Bonds\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Common-Core-Bonds-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Common-Core-Bonds-2.jpg 430w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Common-Core-Bonds-2-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Use the number bond to fill in the math story. Make a simple math drawing. Cross out from 10 ones or some ones to show what happens in the stories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were __ ants in the ant hill. __ of them are sleeping and __ of them are eating. 9 of the sleeping ants woke up. How many ants are not sleeping?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The number of act eating are irrelevant.\u00a0 Clearly, you determine how many ants were already away by subtracting the number of sleeping ant from the total, and then add the nine ants that awoke.\u00a0 But this is easy to figure out if you already understand basic arithmetic.\u00a0 Children just leaning can become confused, especially when the <em>red herring<\/em> of ants that are eating is thrown in.\u00a0 Unless they understand the principles, they might not understand how to derive the relevant information and arithmetically manipulate it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sadly, often this results in confusing jargon being used to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2014\/03\/05\/another-common-core-math-problem-that-makes-no-sense-whatsoever\/\" target=\"_blank\">obfuscate<\/a> the lesson, thus preventing the parents from helping teach their own children.\u00a0 In essence, this means that parents are purged from the educational process and professional &#8220;educators&#8221; are more secure in their public school satrapies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A perfect example can be seen below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" align=\"center\">\n<p>Kindergarten math homework.
