{"id":2278,"date":"2013-05-24T19:26:53","date_gmt":"2013-05-25T02:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/politicalhat.com\/?p=2278"},"modified":"2013-05-24T19:26:53","modified_gmt":"2013-05-25T02:26:53","slug":"not-the-right-race-at-columbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2013\/05\/24\/not-the-right-race-at-columbia\/","title":{"rendered":"Not the Right Race at Columbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ColumbiaU.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ColumbiaU\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2281\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A recent kafuffle has arisen at Columbia University.\u00a0 The Lydia C. Roberts fellowship is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/columbia-university-seeks-change-caucasians-requirement-fellowship-article-1.1343568\" target=\"_blank\">restricted<\/a> to those &#8220;of the Caucasian race,&#8221; and Columbia is seeking to abolish that restriction.\u00a0 The full restriction for the fellowship, as defined by the benefactor, are:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Only white men and women born in the Hawkeye State could be considered for the fellowship. Other stipulations included not allowing students to study law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary surgery or theology. All fellows would also have to move back to Iowa for a minimum of two years after graduating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed, the restrictions <em>are<\/em> outdated.\u00a0 But the idea of excluding people based on their race from receiving a fellowship ought to be condemned regardless of the specific race.\u00a0 Such fellowships that are restricted to &#8220;the Caucasian race&#8221; should be treated no differently than a fellowship that is restricted to any other race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They should either all be allowed, or all be eschewed, with the former being the morally superior position.\u00a0 Since <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/columbia-university-white-scholarship-327\/\" target=\"_blank\">white students<\/a> are an underrepresented minority at Columbia, the use of race-based fellowships restricted to &#8220;underrepresented minorities&#8221; can not be used as a morally valid excuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is problematic, though, that the university is seeking to change the requirements of the fellowship, first awarded in 1920.\u00a0 It was Roberts&#8217; money, and she could impose any restriction she chose.\u00a0 If a university can simply change <em>any<\/em> parameter they like, people might be less likely to set-up fellowships or scholarships with any restrictions whatsoever for fear they may be unilaterally changed in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Columbia, if it does not want to grant the fellowships with the requisite restrictions, ought to return the money to Roberts&#8217; heirs or descendants (assuming any are living and can be found).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Though fellowships that are restricted to &#8220;the Caucasian race&#8221; should be treated no differently than a fellowship that is restricted to any other race, Columbia is quite happy to list other fellowships available for Columbia students that are restricted based on race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\" target=\"_blank\">Amongst<\/a> these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/american-chemical-society-scholars-program-and-acs-co-sponsored-program\" target=\"_blank\">American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholars Program<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 It is restricted to &#8220;underrepresented minority students&#8221; (though white students, who are underrepresented and a minority on campus are not considered &#8220;minority&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/american-indian-graduate-center-graduate-fellowships\" target=\"_blank\">American Indian Graduate Center Graduate Fellowship Program<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Where &#8220;fellowships are monetary awards made to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate or professional degree-seeking students.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/american-political-science-association-minority-fellowships\" target=\"_blank\">American Political Science Association (APSA) Minority Fellowship<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Which is meant to &#8220;assist minority students in completing their doctorates by concentrating not only on minority recruitment, but also assisting with the retention of these groups within the profession&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/congressional-hispanic-caucus-institute-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\">Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI)<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Which &#8220;offers scholarships to Latino\/a students in the U.S. who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who demonstrate a desire to continue their civic engagement in the future.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/hackley-school-edward-e-ford-foundation-fellowship\" target=\"_blank\">Hackley School Edward E. Ford Foundation Fellowship<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Which &#8220;represents part of the school\u2019s efforts to identify, attract, and retain teachers from historically under-represented groups\u2014African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, and Native Americans.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/leland-energy-fellowships\" target=\"_blank\">Leland Energy Fellowships<\/a> <\/strong>\u2014 &#8220;Candidates must be women and\/or minority students who are U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/smithsonian-institution-minority-awards\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian Institution Minority Awards<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Meant for &#8220;minority&#8221; students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/united-negro-college-fundmerck-undergraduate-science-research\" target=\"_blank\">United Negro College Fund\/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarships<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Which &#8220;aim[s] to assist African American undergraduates interested in science in furthering their science education and potentially pursuing science and engineering careers.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There are also fellowships restricted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/point-foundation-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\">LGBTQ<\/a> students and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/american-association-university-women-aauw-fellowships-and-grants\" target=\"_blank\">also<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.columbia.edu\/students\/fellowships\/catalog\/glamour-top-10-college-women-competition-prize\" target=\"_blank\">women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Laudably, there are fellowships that though aimed at certain racial or ethnic communities, are nonetheless still open regardless of race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The main argument for some racially restrictive fellowships, but not others, is based on the idea of &#8220;<a title=\"The Myth of \u201cPrivilege\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2013\/04\/24\/the-myth-of-privilege\/\" target=\"_blank\">privilege<\/a>&#8221; where society is so racist that non-whites will only have a chance if whites are specifically excluded.\u00a0 The idea that society in inherently racist and that &#8220;correct&#8221; racial inequality under the law is thus always acceptable is an <a title=\"Kyriarchy\" href=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2013\/01\/30\/kyriarchy\/\" target=\"_blank\">easily dismisse<\/a>d one. Oh, the irony of the &#8220;discrimination&#8221; where it <em>is<\/em> considered discrimination if people think that men and women are not the same, but <em>is not<\/em> considered discrimination if you treat people unequally on the basis of race!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A recent kafuffle has arisen at Columbia University.\u00a0 The Lydia C.
