Indeed, years ago, he told NRO\u2019s Kathryn Jean Lopez that he wanted what he called \u201cpeaceful\u201d suicide pills sold in supermarkets, even to \u2018troubled teens.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNitschke also sold plastic suicide bags in Australia (which I helped cause to be outlawed when I busted him for his ghoulishness in the national media there in 2001). Subsequently, he traveled the world teaching how-to-commit-suicide classes and starred at international death-movement conventions. Awful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMore recently, Nitschke made world headlines in the assisted-suicide-boosting media for inventing a \u201csuicide capsule\u201d that asphyxiates the suicidal person with nitrogen. At first, Swiss authorities said it would be legal, and then they backtracked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLegal or not, it appears the capsule was used by an American woman to become dead in Switzerland.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The pod iteslf was placed in a forest, in a suicide reminiscent of that from the movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13885937\/Inside-Sarco-pod-suicide-woman-immediately-pressed-button-lay-looked-trees-sky-lost-consciousness-two-minutes-died-five.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soylent Green<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe first person to use the Sarco suicide pod got into the device and &#8216;almost immediately pressed the button&#8217; to take her own life, its creator has claimed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe capsule is designed to allow a person inside to push a button that injects nitrogen gas into the sealed chamber, causing hypoxia and death soon after.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt was set up in a woodland near a cabin in Merishausen, northern Switzerland, with the pod&#8217;s window allowing the 64-year-old American woman to see the trees and sky above her before she died.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c&#8217;It looked exactly as we expected it to look. My guess is that she lost consciousness within two minutes and that she died after five minutes,&#8217; Dr Philip Nitschke, the pod&#8217;s inventor, told Dutch media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c&#8217;We saw sudden, small contractions and movements of the muscles in her arms, but she was probably already unconscious by then.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It turns out that the bad press has gotten the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/sep\/24\/several-detained-in-switzerland-over-suicide-capsule-death-police-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swiss police<\/a> involved.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSwiss police say they have opened a criminal investigation and arrested several people after the suspected death of a woman in a so-called suicide capsule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAccording to local reports, the capsule, named the Sarco Pod by its inventor, was used for the first time on Monday afternoon in a forest close to the German border in the Swiss town of Merishausen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What for? Perhaps it was because the person who died <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/what-did-they-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn\u2019t die alone<\/a> and others had a reason to publicize their death pod?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWell, Swiss law makes suicide legal, even for foreigners and tourists, but only so long as the individual takes their own life absent any \u2018external assistance\u2019 \u2014 particularly from those acting on a \u2018self-serving motive.\u2019 In this case, some of the people in attendance wanted to make sure the device worked, including a photographer who allegedly took pictures of the capsule. So, the witness\u2019s crime was to attempt to secure proof that this suicide machine actually worked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf Swiss law was scrupulously observed, this woman should have died utterly alone \u2014 unaided by anyone, her final thoughts known only to her maker.
