     Online \u201cwitches\u201d, typically of the Tumblr<\/a> variety, have been a source of mockery by your humble author for some time now. We\u2019ve had \u201cTumblr Witches\u201d declare war on Donald Trump<\/a>, Capitalist Patriarchy<\/a>, opposition to \u201cTransgender Women<\/a>\u201d in women\u2019s bathrooms, Gentrification<\/a>, Western Science<\/a>, the Confederacy<\/a>, Google<\/a>, University courses<\/a>, Supreme Court nominees<\/a>, the Fedi-verse<\/a>, and even Allah<\/a>.<\/p>\n

     But what do all these \u201cTumblr Witches\u201d have in common?<\/p>\n

     None of them are actual, literal witches, nor do they have actual, literal magical powers\u2014from Satan or crystals or whatever.<\/p>\n

     But showing how much history rhymes, we\u2019ve seen a resurgence of \u00fee olde \u201cSatanic Panic\u201d of late. \u00a0 One such example is Lance Wallnau<\/a>, a pastor who has gone full MAGA and blames Democrats of literally employing witchcraft<\/a>, and the only way to fight that is through censorship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a recent online conversation about Ms. Harris\u2019s performance at the debate earlier this month, Mr. Wallnau said that she could \u201clook presidential.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018That\u2019s the seduction of what I would say is witchcraft,\u2019 he said. \u2018That\u2019s the manipulation of imagery that creates an impression contrary to the truth, but it seduces you into seeing it. So that spirit, that occult spirit, I believe is operating on her and through her, similar to with Obama.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

     For those old enough, this is the type of hyperbole and fearmongering we heard from the Satanic Panic<\/a>, which started in the late \u201870s before finally burning out in the early \u201890s. Only this time the focus isn\u2019t on D&D<\/a> or Heavy Metal<\/a>\u2026 but on Qanon-level grand conspiracies. The Religious Right as a broader social movement burned itself out with the waning of the Satanic Panic, but continued to be political force within the GOP, abet with a bit more grace once the more overt grifters like Jim & Tammy Faye self-destructed.<\/p>\n

     The inevitable overreach<\/a> has been virtue signaled for a while now. Gone are the sane days when even Alex Jones mocked \u201cwitches, and warlocks, and pumpkin po(p)ssums<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Now we have Tucker Carlson talking with Roseanne Barr<\/a> about drinking blood<\/a> and eating human flesh<\/a>!<\/p>\n
