{"id":21076,"date":"2024-09-19T10:28:29","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T17:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/politicalhat.com\/?p=21076"},"modified":"2024-09-19T10:28:29","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T17:28:29","slug":"quick-takes-university-dei-offices-die-university-of-alabama-university-of-kentucky-ole-miss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2024\/09\/19\/quick-takes-university-dei-offices-die-university-of-alabama-university-of-kentucky-ole-miss\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Takes \u2013 University DEI Offices Die: University of Alabama; University of Kentucky; Ole Miss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Another &#8220;quick takes&#8221; on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The focus this time: The death of open DEI?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;First, a little mood music:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mP2pgDvCeLM?si=UKU5q9MVP5Z7cIiw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Carrying on\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5372\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/EaglewithFlag.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"176\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/university-alabama-system-ends-dei-offices-ahead-anti-dei-law-taking-effect-\/25976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Alabama<\/a> is getting ahead of a coming anti-DEI law by preemptively shutting down it\u2019s <em>de jure<\/em> offices.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe University of Alabama System will terminate its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices following the passage of a state law that cracks down on DEI programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe University of Alabama System revealed Tuesday that the main University of Alabama campus at Tuscaloosa, as well as the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, will be shuttering their DEI initiatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cS.B. 129, Alabama\u2019s anti-DEI bill signed into law on March 20, bans \u2018divisive concepts\u2019 that teach that \u2018any race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAlabama Governor Kay Ivey said at the time: \u2018My Administration has and will continue to value Alabama\u2019s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors on college campuses \u2013 or wherever else for that matter \u2013 to go under the acronym of DEI, using taxpayer funds, to push their liberal political movement counter to what the majority of Alabamians believe.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe University of Alabama\u2019s decision to shut down its DEI offices preempted the law\u2019s taking effect on Oct. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/university-kentucky-shuts-dei-office-amid-concerns-divisiveness\/26170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Kentucky in Lexington<\/a> similarly shut down it\u2019s <em>de jure<\/em> DEI offices when criticized.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe University of Kentucky in Lexington recently closed its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office after state lawmakers claimed that it had a negative impact on freedom of discussion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe announcement was made on Tuesday by university President Eli Capilouto in an email sent to students and faculty. The Office for Institutional Diversity will be closed, but its employees will move to other departments on campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCapilouto acknowledged that the presence of the DEI office made some feel that the university might \u201cappear partisan or political on the issues of our day and, as a result, narrowly interpret things solely through the lens of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/ole-miss-announces-closure-dei-division\/26155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Mississippi<\/a> is following the trend.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) is closing its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department, citing a trend of state governments prohibiting public funding for DEI initiatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2018With the establishment of the Division of Access, Opportunity, and Community Engagement, the university is evaluating and updating its Pathways to Equity plan,\u2019 the school\u2019s website says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe move comes after State Auditor Shad White gave a speech last month in which he blasted public funding for DEI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2018Unfortunately, my office found that here in Mississippi \u2013 me and you, the taxpayers \u2013 we pay millions of dollars every single year for DEI training at our public universities,\u2019 White said in a July speech. \u2018It makes absolutely no sense.
