Now imagine that worldview adopted by the entire state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOn July 12, that\u2019s what happened when California\u2019s Board of Education, composed of eleven teachers, bureaucrats, professors\u2014and a student\u2014decided to approve the California Mathematics Framework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTechnically, the CMF is just a series of recommendations. As a practical matter, it\u2019s the new reality. School districts and textbook manufacturers are already adapting to the new standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHere are some of them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most students won\u2019t learn algebra until high school. In the past, when that was expected of middle schoolers, the CMF tells us, \u2018success for many students was undermined.\u2019<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">This means calculus will mostly be verboten, because students can\u2019t take calculus \u2018unless they have taken a high school algebra course or Mathematics I in middle school.\u2019<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018Detracking\u2019 (ending advanced courses) will be the law of the land until high school; students will be urged to \u2018take the same rich mathematics courses in kindergarten through eighth grade.\u2019<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lessons will foreground \u2018equity\u2019 at the expense of teaching math basics like addition and subtraction. \u2018Under the framework, the range of student backgrounds, learning differences, and perspectives, taken collectively, are seen as an instructional asset that can be used to launch and support all students in a deep and shared exploration of the same context and open task,\u2019 the CMF continues. It adds that \u2018learning is not just a matter of gaining new knowledge\u2014it is also about growth and identity development.\u2019<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Letter grades will be discouraged in favor of \u2018standards-based assessments.\u2019 (It\u2019s unclear what those are.)\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is good or bad that schools are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/05\/08\/4-day-school-week-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching fewer days<\/a> in a year?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNationally, 850 school districts \u2014 representing thousands of individual schools \u2014 have dropped the 5th day of instruction, up from 650 districts in 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c[\u2026] minuses include mounting evidence that kids in 4dsw programs fall behind their peers. One 12-state study, led by Paul Thompson, an economics professor at Oregon State University and leading scholar of 4dsw policies, found \u2018reductions in both math and English\/language arts achievement\u2019 in districts that adopted the 4-day schedule.
