Heather wanted to go to Oregon for one reason: she wanted to die.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOregon had legalized physician-assisted suicide for patients with a terminal illness (also known as medical aid in dying, or Maid) in 1997, and Heather, who had suffered with an intractable chronic illness for over 30 years, knew her illness was going to kill her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2018Death is coming for me,\u2019 Heather said. \u2018It\u2019s coming for me, Mom.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDoctors had prophesied Heather\u2019s potential mortality for years. \u201cIf you keep doing what you\u2019re doing, you\u2019ll end up in hospice,\u201d said one. They meant it as a warning, but Heather remained impervious to the words. I\u2019m fine, Mom, she reassured Jennifer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFive years later, however, as her illness worsened, hospice sounded like a haven for her last days. But when the 48-year-old tried to find a hospice program in her native Tucson, she was rebuffed. Heather didn\u2019t have a terminal illness, doctors said. Her condition was treatable. All she had to do was eat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTo her mom, this was laughable. Anorexia and bulimia had consumed Heather\u2019s life since she was 15. She hadn\u2019t been at a healthy weight for 33 years now, and still couldn\u2019t bear the thought of eating normal meals and not vomiting them up. To quiet the illness\u2019s perpetual hissing voice, Heather began abusing alcohol, opiates and amphetamines just to get a few minutes of peace and quiet in her own head. Her temporary respite had become a crippling addiction. She spent years in institutions and group homes, bouncing from crisis to crisis.
