So-called \u201csensitivity\u201d readers have rewritten various authors from Agatha Christie<\/a>, Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming<\/a>, R.L. Stine, and even myriad fairy tales<\/a>! Now, they are \u201cmodernizing\u201d P.G. Wodehouse\u2019s \u201cJeeves and Wooster\u201d<\/a> stories to they don\u2019t offend modern snowflakes.<\/p>\n \u201cJeeves and Wooster books have been rewritten to remove prose by PG Wodehouse deemed \u201cunacceptable\u201d by publishers, the Telegraph can reveal.<\/p>\n \u201cOriginal passages in the comic novels have been purged or reworked for new editions issued by Penguin Random House.<\/p>\n \u201cTrigger warnings have also been added to revised editions telling would-be Wodehouse readers that his themes and characters may be \u2018outdated\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cOne warning states that the writer\u2019s prose has been altered because it was judged to be \u2018unacceptable\u2019 by Penguin, a publishing house which enlists the services of sensitivity readers.<\/p>\n \u201cThe disclaimer printed on the opening pages of the 2023 reissue of Thank you, Jeeves states: \u00a0 \u2018Please be aware that this book was published in the 1930s and contains language, themes and characterisations which you may find outdated.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018In the present edition we have sought to edit, minimally, words that we regard as unacceptable to present-day readers.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n “Jeeves, what is a ‘cis-het’ and why does that make me an ‘oppressor’.”<\/p><\/div>\n Some of the changes include:<\/p>\n \u201cIn the 1934 novel Right Ho, Jeeves, newly reissued by Penguin, a racial term used to describe a \u2018minstrel of the old school\u2019 has been removed.<\/p>\n \u201cIn Thank You, Jeeves, whose plot hinges on the performance of a minstrel troupe, numerous racial terms have been removed or altered, both in dialogue spoken by the characters in the book, and from first-person narration in the voice of Bertie.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Buy old<\/em> physical books and treasure them.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" So-called \u201csensitivity\u201d readers have rewritten various authors from Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming, R.L.
