The purpose of higher education wasn\u2019t just about specialized education as training for future employment, but to make sure that those who would be leaders in the future would have an understanding of the country they\u2019d lead, either politically, in business, or simply as informed citizens. \u00a0 In the United States, this moulding of the citizenry was egalitarian and meritocratic, with many private\u2014often religious\u2014colleges and state colleges making higher education available to all who could meet the minimum standard to attend. However, this vaunted history was always alloyed increasingly with the utility of colleges as a way for those with money and power to keep their progeny in power and the <em>hoi polloi<\/em> out. Sadly, elite colleges as the gatekeepers of the modern day Nomenklatura\u2014where future members are selected and undesirables kept out\u2014are dropping even the fa\u00e7ade of meritocracy or even education as a tool for financial betterment. And this <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1596491695683960838.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gatekeeping<\/a> starts with K\u201412 and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/lbSh1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preparation for college<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" >How admissions to top universities in the US really works as revealed by a simple comparison between one of NYC&#39;s top public high schools (Stuyvesant HS) and one of NYC&#39;s top private high schools (Horace Mann School). Yes, probably. But consider that nearly all top private colleges are need blind.
