We are told that euthanasia is \u2018compassion.\u2019 But how compassionate is it when last year in Canada, hundreds of sick people were euthanized because of loneliness?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe country\u2019s 2019 MAID [medical assistance in dying] Annual Report found that 13.7 percent of the 5,631 Canadians killed by doctors asked to be lethally injected because of \u2018isolation or loneliness.\u2019 If my math is right, that\u2019s about 771 people, or 64 a month, or two per day. Good grief!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSome of the other reasons people gave for asking to be killed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Loss of ability to engage in enjoyable activities, 82.1 percent. That\u2019s a serious concern, but with proper interventions, it can be overcome.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Loss of ability to perform activities of daily living, 78.1 percent. Ditto.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cInadequate control of pain (or concern about it),\u201d 53.9 percent. That\u2019s a scandalously high percentage. Palliative and hospice pain-control experts will tell you that most serious pain in terminal illnesses can be successfully alleviated.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Loss of dignity, 53.3 percent. Again, this is a serious concern but can be overcome with appropriate care.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perceived burden on family, friends, and caregivers, 34 percent. In other words, people put themselves out of their loved one\u2019s misery.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emotional distress\/anxiety\/fear\/existential suffering, 4.7 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These statistics are scandalous and should make Canada deeply ashamed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Canada, which boasts of it\u2019s universal healthcare, amongst other social services, is of such a high quality, apparently, that many people would <em>literally<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2020\/09\/02\/odsp-covid19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rather die<\/a> than deal with them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLow income and racialized communities have been hit the hardest, but there is another group that feels abandoned and ignored \u2013 people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere are fears some with disabilities are considering assisted dying as a last resort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cKim is a recipient of Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and says her life has been \u2018pure hell\u2019 during the pandemic. CityNews has honoured Kim\u2019s request not to use her last name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2018It\u2019s like I\u2019m being punished for being born disabled, like I committed some kind of crime,\u2019 said Kim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShe was born with digestive ailment and has had most of her intestines removed. Kim needs a feeding tube and survives on ODSP payments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cA single person with disabilities in Ontario can earn a maximum of $1,169 in social assistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cKim also receives a food subsidy of $250 a month due to health issues, giving her just over $1,400 per month to live on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShe pays $1,000 to rent a 300-square foot RV in a trailer park, leaving her with $421 for all other expenses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cKim says she usually never has any extra money left over and often doesn\u2019t make it to the end of the month for food.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/canadian-disabled-seek-euthanasia-because-of-poor-social-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another justification<\/a> to commit homicide.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnd here\u2019s the thing. The reason for wanting to die could be lack of access to social services and an inability to afford to live. But all the doctor committing the legal homicide will see is the disability. \u2018Of course, you want to die,\u2019 he or she will be saying by agreeing to the lethal jab. \u2018Who wouldn\u2019t?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hospices that don\u2019t let their patients get killed is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/canadian-hospice-to-be-shuttered-for-refusing-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verboten<\/a> in Canada.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI have written here before about Delta Hospice in British Columbia, which has been under unremitting pressure by the government of the province \u2014 including a funding cutoff \u2014 only because it refuses to participate in euthanasia. It is now being forced to lay off clinical workers and faces eviction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEuthanasia \u2014 killing patients \u2014 is directly antithetical to the hospice philosophy as established by the modern movement\u2019s founder, the late Dame Cecily Saunders. Indeed, when I interviewed her for my book, Culture of Death, she told me that assisted suicide denies the intrinsic equal dignity of terminally ill patients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNot only that, but there is a hospital directly next door to Delta where patients can go to be lethally injected, so it isn\u2019t as if suicidal patients won\u2019t be able to obtain their desire to be made dead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBut that isn\u2019t the problem. Delta\u2019s stand sends the moral message that human life has intrinsic value and that medicalized killing is wrong. We can\u2019t have that.
