Steven] Reick pointed specifically to a portion of the new standards that call on teachers to \u2018understand and value the notion that multiple lived experiences exist, that there is not one \u201ccorrect\u201d way of doing or understanding something, and that what is seen as \u2018correct\u2019 is most often based on our lived experiences.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHe also pointed to another provision calling on teachers to \u2018(a)ssess how their biases and perceptions affect their teaching practice and how they access tools to mitigate their own behavior (racism, sexism, homophobia, unearned privilege, Eurocentrism, etc.)\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnother provision calls on educators to \u2018(b)e aware of the effects of power and privilege and the need for social advocacy and social action to better empower diverse students and communities.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unless at least some Democrats oppose this new set of standards, it will automatically be enacted and take effect in four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The full proposals can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberdriveillinois.com\/departments\/index\/register\/volume44\/register_volume44_issue_37.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> or at the end of this post, but here are some highlights of the new standards, which start on page 176 of the document and page 14576 of the register:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Self-Awareness and Relationships to Others \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and\u00a0leaders are reflective and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and how they\u00a0impact others, leading to more cohesive and productive student development as it\u00a0relates to academic and social-emotional development for all students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Systems of Oppression \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and leaders understand\u00a0that there are systems in our society that create and reinforce inequities, thereby\u00a0creating oppressive conditions. Educators work actively against these systems in\u00a0their everyday roles in educational institutions.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students as Individuals \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and leaders view and\u00a0value their students as individuals within the context of their families and\u00a0communities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students as Co-Creators \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and leaders (whofundamentally believe all students are capable) center learning around students&#8217;\u00a0experiences and position them as co-creators, with emphasis on prioritizing historically marginalized students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leveraging Student Activism \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and leaders will\u00a0support and create opportunities for student advocacy and representation in the\u00a0content and classroom.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Content Selections in All Curricula \u2013 Culturally responsive teachers and leaders\u00a0intentionally embrace student identities and prioritize representation in the\u00a0curriculum. In turn, students are not only given a chance to identify with the\u00a0curriculum, they become exposed to other cultures within their schools and both\u00a0their local and global communities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Student Representation in the Learning Environment \u2013 Culturally responsive\u00a0teachers and leaders ensure the diversity of their student population is equally\u00a0represented within the learning environment. In turn, all members of the student\u00a0population feel seen, heard, and affirmed. Exceptionally well-versed culturally\u00a0responsive teachers and leaders provide exposure to underrepresented or\u00a0misrepresented minority groups, even when they are not present within the\u00a0population of their school and community at large.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The evil unwoke provisions that are being repealed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Content Knowledge \u2013 The competent teacher understands the central concepts,\u00a0methods of inquiry, and structures of disciplines and creates learning experiences\u00a0that make the content meaningful to all students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human Development and Learning \u2013 The competent teacher understands how\u00a0individuals grow, develop, and learn and provides learning opportunities that\u00a0support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diversity \u2013 The competent teacher understands how students differ in their\u00a0approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to\u00a0diverse learners.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Planning for Instruction \u2013 The competent teacher understands instructional\u00a0planning and designs instruction based upon knowledge of the discipline,\u00a0students, the community, and curriculum goals.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Learning Environment \u2013 The competent teacher uses an understanding of\u00a0individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment\u00a0that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and\u00a0self-motivation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instructional Delivery \u2013 The competent teacher understands and uses a variety of\u00a0instructional strategies to encourage students&#8217; development of critical thinking,\u00a0problem-solving, and performance skills.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Communication \u2013 The competent teacher uses knowledge of effective written,\u00a0verbal, non-verbal, and visual communication techniques to foster active inquiry,\u00a0collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Assessment \u2013 The competent teacher understands various formal and informal\u00a0assessment strategies and uses them to support the continuous development of all\u00a0students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Collaborative Relationships \u2013 The competent teacher understands the role of the\u00a0community in education and develops and maintains collaborative relationships\u00a0with colleagues, parents\/guardians, and the community to support students&#8217;\u00a0learning and well-being.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reflection and Professional Growth \u2013 The competent teacher is a reflective\u00a0practitioner who continually evaluates how choices and actions affect students,\u00a0parents, and other professionals in the learning community and actively seeks\u00a0opportunities to grow professionally.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Professional Conduct and Leadership \u2013 The competent teacher understands\u00a0education as a profession, maintains standards of professional conduct, and\u00a0provides leadership to improve students&#8217;
