In past years, I\u2019ve documented the focus of AERA academics on matters that seem only obliquely connected to curriculum, instruction, and policy. It looks like more of the same this year, from the symposium on \u2018Liberating Oppressed Ontologies and Cosmologies for Transformational Praxis\u2019 to the paper \u2018Queer Evolution: (Re)invigorating Environmental Education through Queer Interpretations of Evolutionary Onto-Epistemological Choreography.\u2019 But this year\u2019s conference has especially lofty ambitions. Under the title Leveraging Education Research in a \u2018Post-Truth\u2019 Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence, the event\u2019s promotional poster features a lighthouse inscribed with the words \u2018Trust, Integrity, Methodology, and Reliability,\u2019 which looks out over a sea of \u2018Post-Truth, Propaganda, and Fabrication.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUnfortunately, rather than a renewed commitment to methodologically sound research into education policy and practice, the conference program demonstrates a preoccupation with promoting a virulent new brand of racism. A keyword search of the conference program reveals 422 hits for whiteness\u2014more than for \u2018personalized learning&#8217; (16), \u2018school boards\u2019 (19), \u2018standardized testing\u2019 (20), \u2018high school graduation\u2019 (23) \u2018reading achievement\u2019 (24), \u2018digital learning\u2019 (25), \u2018policy analysis\u2019 (31), \u2018early education\u2019 (38), \u2018teacher evaluation\u2019 (41) \u2018literacy instruction\u2019 (42), \u2018bilingual education\u2019 (48), and \u2018achievement gap\u2019 (75) combined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A symposium called \u2018The Interrogation of Whiteness in Progressive Public Schools\u2019 promises to explore \u2018the experience of teachers and education leaders who work to undo whiteness in public schools.\u2019 A featured paper in that session is \u2018Trust, Community, and Dismantling White Dominance.\u2019 Another, \u2018Critical-Race Elementary Schooling: Teacher Change Agents are Undoing Whiteness in Elementary Schools,\u2019 celebrates teachers who \u2018actively resist elements of Whiteness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sometimes, surprisingly enough, academia has to be <a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/news-and-politics\/canadian-government-imposes-social-justice-on-all-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pushed<\/a> into evermore Leftward positions of insanity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Liberal government of Canada has formulated a new program to which all universities are expected to commit. It is called \u2018Dimensions: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.\u2019 A &#8216;Charter&#8217; for &#8216;Dimensions&#8217; has been distributed to all university presidents, who are urged to sign, endorsing the program for their universities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMinister for Science and Sport Kirsty Duncan launched this program, using the \u2018independent&#8217; funding councils\u2014The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The National Science and Engineering Council (NSERC), and The Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)\u2014as the conduit for \u2018Dimensions&#8217; grants. This is not the first time that Minister Duncan has imposed &#8216;equity, diversity, and inclusion\u2019 conditions for grants; in 2017, new diversity criteria were enunciated for the Canada Research Chair grants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe pressure continues through subsequent grant years. Minister Duncan says, &#8216;Our government is committed to promoting equity and diversity within research and to supporting the next generation of research leaders.\u2019 Ted Hewitt, president of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and chair of the Canada Research Chairs Program Steering Committee assures us that they have \u2018A strong action plan to address equity, diversity and inclusion.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhat is this \u2018equity, diversity, and inclusion&#8217; in aid of? According to the Charter of the Dimensions program, the objective is \u2018to foster increased research excellence, innovation and creativity within the post-secondary sector across all disciplines.&#8217; Who could object to \u2018increased research excellence, innovation, and creativity,\u2019 which is the conventional and legitimate objective of research administrators? What is new here is the means by which these results would be allegedly brought about: \u2018through increased equity, diversity and inclusion.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And, of course, it is necessary to choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sat-to-give-students-adversity-score-to-capture-social-and-economic-background-11557999000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">right youths<\/a> to indoctrinate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe College Board plans to assign an adversity score to every student who takes the SAT to try to capture their social and economic background, jumping into the debate raging over race and class in college admissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis new number, called an adversity score by college admissions officers, is calculated using 15 factors including the crime rate and poverty levels from the student\u2019s high school and neighborhood. Students won\u2019t be told he scores, but colleges will see the numbers when reviewing their applications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It turns out that they decided not to use the \u201cadversity score\u201d&#8230; and use a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/jazz-shaw\/2019\/08\/28\/sats-adversity-score-gone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">landscape<\/a>&#8221; instead.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis doesn\u2019t mean that the issue is entirely dead. The adversity score tool is being replaced with something called \u2018Landscape.\u2019 But it doesn\u2019t really sound all that different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey were working with what they called the Environmental Context Dashboard, which does basically the same thing. They claim to have made improvements to it and then slapped a new name on it.
