Whether they were Gay or Straight does not detract from their impact. But now it seems that simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redstate.com\/joesquire\/2017\/11\/18\/new-california-textbooks-put-focus-people%E2%80%99s-sexuality-instead-ya-know-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being Queer<\/a> is enough to elevate one to historical significance.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;As a state, California has adopted a fresh take on history: A person\u2019s sexual identity is what matters more than what that person does.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The state\u2019s board of education has approved ten textbooks that it has deemed &#8216;inclusive enough,&#8217; and rejected two others that were not, including Houghton Mifflin Harcourt*, one of the top textbooks producers in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;[C] hildren at this age don\u2019t need to know sexual preference in order to understand what a person has contributed to society. That Emily Dickinson was a lesbian or that Walt Whitman was gay in no way changes the fact that &#8216;A Noiseless, Patient Spider&#8217; is one of the best poems I read in high school or that every Emily Dickinson poem can be read to the tune of &#8216;Yellow Rose Of Texas.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of course, the demand that non-Whites (or &#8220;minorities) be included runs at odds with accusations of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/?ID=10403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tokenizing<\/a>&#8221; non-Whites&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;A team of professors recently criticized K-12 textbooks for failing to explore \u201csocietal power dynamics\u201d in their depictions of women and minorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;To the surprise of City University of New York professor Sherry Deckman and her colleagues, after reviewing nearly 1,500 images in K-12 textbooks, they discovered that not only are women and racial minorities represented parallel to their representation in the population, but are even slightly over-represented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Despite this progress, since racial minorities were barely depicted in textbooks just two decades ago, the team argues that this is actually worrisome, saying the representations of minorities and women have now become &#8216;superficial&#8217; and &#8216;tokenistic.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;This is because minorities are depicted in ways that fail to challenge &#8216;societal power dynamics,&#8217; which inadvertently leads to the reification of the assumption that society is &#8216;inherently Eurocentric, male-centric, Christian-centric, [and] heterosexual-centric,&#8217; she writes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5371\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"37\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line.gif 500w, https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/eag_line-300x22.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, economic textbooks seem to exist for one reason: To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/?ID=10438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oppress women or something<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;A University of Michigan professor recently argued that the lack of women in Economics textbooks could help explain why few females pursue the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Associate Economics professor Betsey Stevenson and Hanna Zlotnick, a Master of Public Policy candidate, recently reviewed the depictions women and men in eight leading economics textbooks, finding that 77 percent of people represented in those textbooks were male.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;TTFN.<\/p>\n<p><meta name=\"twitter:card\" content=\"summary\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:site\" content=\"@PoliticHatBlog\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:creator\" content=\"@ThePoliticalHat\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:title\" content=\"Textbook Social Justice: Sexual Orientation As History;
