{"id":13355,"date":"2017-05-24T19:33:18","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T02:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/politicalhat.com\/?p=13355"},"modified":"2017-05-24T19:33:18","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T02:33:18","slug":"indigenous-science-isnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2017\/05\/24\/indigenous-science-isnt\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Science Isn&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;At the so-called &#8220;March to Science&#8221; protests, one of the many examples of anti-science sentiment on display was a call for embracing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/nidhisubbaraman\/these-native-american-scholars-marched-for-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indigenous sciences<\/a>&#8220;&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Indigenous knowledge and practices are often dismissed as mythology or &#8216;quaint stories,&#8217; Melissa Nelson, associate professor of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University [\u2026].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;&#8216;There are numerous contemporary indigenous sciences based on a long tradition and history. They need to be validated as such \u2014 not as folklore,&#8217; said Nelson, who is Anishinaabe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;With the global March For Science events being held on Saturday, Nelson was part of a group that wrote a declaration arguing that indigenous science, including ancient practices of conservation and healing, could complement dominant &#8216;Western science&#8217; and be useful at a time when people are looking for ways to tackle problems, such as climate change and issues of sustainability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;&#8216;It seemed incomplete to me that as we celebrate science, we don\u2019t celebrate the other sciences,&#8217; Robin Kimmerer, director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at State University of New York, who is Citizen Potawatomi, told BuzzFeed News.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A herb that is used to treat an illness may very well have a chemical that does indeed have a pharmacological positive effect. However, perhaps the herb is just a herb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There are not different &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2016\/10\/19\/science-and-racism-or-why-witches-throwing-magical-lightning-bolts-dont-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sciences<\/a>&#8220;. Different &#8220;ways of knowing&#8221; are not all valid. There is no such thing as \u201cWestern science\u201d just as there is not such thing as \u201cIndigenous science\u201d: There is just science and not-science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is this type of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2014\/10\/04\/the-climate-change-eco-movement-in-one-picture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indigenous science<\/a>&#8221; nonsense that leads stupid rich White people to worship crystals or believe in indigo children.
