     What began as a rallying cry for “democracy” has now turned into a purge of dissenters.\u00a0 The failed coup<\/a> in Turkey, whether a “Reichstag<\/a>” moment or simply a pathetic attempt at a coup, has given Erdo\u011fan the excuse to declare<\/a> a state<\/a> of emergency<\/a>, suspend human rights<\/a>, and purge dissenters<\/a> from any position of power.\u00a0 Standing up for democracy, then, is leading to the destruction of democracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

     Erdo\u011fan is not only torturing<\/a> and raped<\/a> soldiers, but going after<\/a> schools<\/a>, charities<\/a>, unions<\/a>, the very media<\/a> that defending him during the coup, and even Turkey’s Supreme Court<\/a>.\u00a0 And these decrees “have the force of law and can’t be appealed.” \u00a0By “defending democracy”, the useful tools<\/a> are now finding themselves without the rule of law<\/a>; by “defending democracy” they got an authoritarian<\/a> dictator<\/a>.\u00a0 Rather than allow the military to be a “defender of secular democracy” as Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk envisioned it, Erdo\u011fan now wants absolute control<\/a> over the military.\u00a0 Past coups led to stabilization and a return to democracy; ironically by “defending democracy”, democracy might fade away for good.<\/p>\n

     The coup, assuming that it was an actual coup, was pro-democracy.\u00a0 Defending Erdo\u011fan, though elected with just under 52% of the vote, was anti-democracy.<\/p>\n
