{"id":11395,"date":"2016-03-23T01:05:48","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T08:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/politicalhat.com\/?p=11395"},"modified":"2016-03-23T01:05:48","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T08:05:48","slug":"at-school-its-wrong-to-be-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/2016\/03\/23\/at-school-its-wrong-to-be-right\/","title":{"rendered":"At School, It&#8217;s Wrong To Be Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;One of the problems with Common Core and the Standardized testing, is badly written questions.\u00a0 But a bigger problem are teachers and principals who stand by that idiocy no matter how wrong it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/whats-largest-number-you-can-represent-3-digits-nope-its-ed-trice\" target=\"_blank\">case in point<\/a> demonstrating the problem with teachers relying on standardized testing materials rather than using their own brains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A parent of a grade school student was brought in because the student was being &#8220;disruptive&#8221; in class.\u00a0 What was the disruption?\u00a0 The student claimed the teacher was wrong.\u00a0 The teacher claimed the answer to the question &#8220;what was the largest number that can be represented with 3 digits&#8221; was &#8220;999&#8221;.\u00a0 The teacher <em>was<\/em> wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div id=\"attachment_11396\" style=\"width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11396\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11396\" title=\"999\" src=\"https:\/\/impeachreno.org\/politicalhat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/999.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"186\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pictured: A number larger than 999<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of course, the authoritarian strain in modern edukashun would not allow that to stand, and so called in the parent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nine to the power of Nine to the Nine is a much, much larger number than 999.\u00a0 The teacher claimed that that was not the correct answer because the students hadn&#8217;t been taught exponents yet.\u00a0 That most the students hadn&#8217;t been taught that yet does not mean that the answer is incorrect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The problem was with the poor wording of the question, with the teacher and principal <a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/instapundit\/229521\/\" target=\"_blank\">acknowledging<\/a> the provided answer was indeed incorrect, but that they would follow the incorrect answer anyway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Therein lies the biggest concern: Teachers are just going through the motions and regurgitating what they are told to do.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t even peddling pedagogy; this is automata in action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A little mood music:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oggEM6lmHuY\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>P.S.<\/strong> The students answer is correct if one assumes that one can <em>only<\/em> use three numbers, since that is not specified in the question.\u00a0 If allowed to variable and other symbols the highest number you can make with three digits using the standard base-10 numbers, there is a no &#8220;largest&#8221; number as you will quickly accelerate towards infinity.\u00a0 If other bases are allowed, even if you grant that only numbers are allowed, there is no &#8220;largest&#8221; number as the &#8220;largest number&#8221; is limited by the size of the base, which is infinite.\u00a0 Heck, if you use Roman numerals: M to the power of M to the M would be much, much larger than nine to the power of nine to the nine.\u00a0 Using the Greek letter M (equal to 10,000) \u2013 a literal myriad \u2013 would allow for an even higher number.<\/p>\n<p><meta name=\"twitter:card\" content=\"summary\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:site\" content=\"@PoliticHatBlog\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:creator\" content=\"@ThePoliticalHat\" \/><meta name=\"twitter:title\" content=\"At School, It's Wrong To Be Right\"\/><meta name=\"twitter:description\" content=\"One of the problems with Common Core and the Standardized testing, is badly written questions.
